Sometimes the track is also damaged. We replace the rollers, check the track, and the door glides like new, usually in a single visit.

Wait too long and the track gets bumpy, wavy, or worn flat, and then it has to be repaired too. That is why we tell people to call the moment they hear noise.

Rollers are a wear part. They carry the full weight of the panel across every open and close, and once the wheel flattens or the bearing seizes, the door drags no matter how clean the track is.
The job runs in a set order. The tech lifts the panel out of the frame, which on a heavy insulated door is a two-person move. With the panel on sawhorses we pull the old roller assemblies out of the bottom rail, match the replacement to the housing, and set the new ones in. Then the panel goes back in the frame and we turn the adjustment screws until the door sits square in the opening and the latch lines up with the keeper.
That last step is the one people skip when they try it themselves. New rollers set at the wrong height leave the door sitting low on one corner, and a low corner puts the whole weight on two wheels instead of four. We set the height, run the door end to end, and check that it seals at both ends before we call it done.
Worn rollers do not stay a roller problem. Once the wheel stops turning it starts skidding, and a skidding wheel cuts a groove into the aluminum track below it. That is what the grinding noise is.
If you catch it while the track is only dirty or lightly scored, track repair is straightforward. We clear the channel, straighten any bowed sections, and in many cases cap the worn area with a stainless track insert that gives the new rollers a clean surface to ride on. The insert costs a fraction of replacing the whole track member, and it outlasts the original aluminum.
Full track replacement comes into play when the channel is worn through, badly bent, or the door has been running on damaged track long enough to chew a wave into it. That is a bigger job because the frame member usually has to come out. It is also avoidable, which is why we tell people to call as soon as the door starts making noise instead of waiting for it to stop moving.
