Sliding Door Repair: What Our Expert Sees in the Field

The most common questions we get, answered from the field by Yuval, one of JDM's elite technicians who personally repairs 20 to 30 sliding doors a week.

The #1 cause, 100% of the time

It is almost always the rollers, not just dirt

A lot of people think they just need to clean and lubricate the door and it will glide again.

  • Most of the time that is not enough.
  • The rollers, the small wheels the door rides on, wear down, and once they are worn the door drags no matter how clean the track is.
  • Across every sliding door I service, worn rollers are the single most common problem, and they are also one of the fastest things for us to replace.
Coastal: 2 to 5 years

Salt air near the ocean wears rollers out much faster

Where you live changes how long rollers last.

  • Near the ocean, salt air is hard on the metal, so coastal doors usually need new rollers every 2 to 5 years.
  • In a clean, inland area a set can last 5 to 10 years.
  • Weight matters too: a heavy glass door and a door you open constantly both wear faster.
  • In Florida especially, salt water makes this one of the most common repairs we see.
Catch it early, save the track

The moment it scratches or grinds, act right away

When your door starts scratching or making a grinding noise, that is the warning sign.

  • If you keep sliding it on worn rollers, the rollers start chewing into the track underneath.
  • Replace the rollers on time and you usually do not need a new track at all.
  • Let it go too long and now you are paying to fix the track as well.
  • Take care of it as soon as you hear it and you keep the repair small.

Answered by Yuval

Why is my sliding door so hard to open?

In most cases it is worn rollers, the wheels the door rides on. People assume cleaning and lubricating will fix it, but once the rollers are worn the door drags no matter what. Sometimes the track is also damaged. We replace the rollers, check the track, and the door glides like new, usually in a single visit.

Do worn rollers really damage the track?

Yes. Once the door starts scratching or grinding, worn rollers begin cutting into the track. If you replace the rollers on time you usually save the track completely. Wait too long and the track gets bumpy, wavy, or worn flat, and then it has to be repaired too. That is why we tell people to call the moment they hear noise.

How often do sliding door rollers need to be replaced?

It depends on location, use, and door weight. Inland and in cleaner areas, 5 to 10 years is normal. Near the ocean, salt air cuts that down to about 2 to 5 years. Heavier doors and doors you use constantly wear faster. Rollers are a wear part, like tires on a car, so eventually every sliding door needs a new set.

Sliding Door Repair - Professional service by JDM Sliding Doors

Expert Sliding Door Repair You Can Count On

From Gal Cohen, Field Area Manager: "I've spent 20+ years on sliding door repair jobs, and our crews now run them across Florida, New York, Georgia and Colorado. Most repairs we handle wrap up in roughly 2 hours, same-day, and you can see the real before-and-afters in the photos and videos on this page."

Most sliding door problems trace back to a few worn parts: rollers, tracks, locks, or weather seals. JDM repairs all of them, usually same day, with a flat-rate quote before any work starts. A door that sticks, jams, or won't lock isn't just annoying; it's a security gap and an energy leak that costs more the longer it waits.

Our sliding door repair covers the whole system. We replace worn rollers so the door glides again, realign or replace bent tracks that cause grinding, rebuild handles and locks, and swap deteriorated weather stripping that lets in drafts, water, and bugs. Cracked or fogged glass gets replaced too. We carry common parts on the truck, so most repairs finish in one visit.

We're locally owned, and our techs know how local humidity and salt air wear down hardware. Flat-rate pricing means no surprise invoice; same-day service means you're not stuck waiting. We test the door and walk you through the work before we leave.

"After I made an appointment I decided I was going to try and do it myself. Michael FaceTimed me, walked me through what to do, then call back if I still needed him. An hour later I called him and he was at my house in 35 minutes. Some of the best service I've ever received from a contractor. He finished in two hours and went above and beyond. The same-day service was incredible. Absolute professionals."

"After a couple of hiccups with getting our repair done by someone else, our technician Richard showed up on time (actually half an hour earlier than the appointment time). He was very polite and got the job done in the time he told us it would take. Our glass door now glides smoothly and is able to lock again. I highly recommend Richard, he represented his company very well. I will definitely consider using them in the future!"

  2. 02
    Custom Solutions

We map out the exact repair your door needs and hand you a flat-rate quote before we touch anything. You approve the price first, so there is no surprise at the end.

  3. 03
    Skilled Repairs

We make the fix with quality replacement parts and careful technique. Every part is set so the door glides, seals, and locks the way it should.

  4. 04
    Testing & Inspection

We open and close the door several times to confirm smooth travel, a solid lock, tight seals, and alignment that holds from top to bottom before we leave.

Hearing a scratch or grind? Ask about a same-day roller service before it eats your track.

Worn rollers cut into the track the longer you slide on them. Catch it early and we usually save the track completely.

#1 Most common repair
  1. 01

    Roller Replacement

Worn rollers are the top reason a slider drags, binds, or jumps the track. We swap them for stainless or steel-bearing rollers sized to your door, then adjust height so it glides and seals. Most last 8 to 15 years depending on door weight and track condition.

  2. 02

    Track Repair and Replacement

Tracks collect dirt, pet hair, and sand, and in coastal Florida salt air pits the metal over time. We clean and straighten the track, add a new track cap when the surface is worn, and replace bent or corroded tracks that are past straightening.

  3. 03

    Lock and Handle Repair

A sticky lock, a broken mortise lock, or a loose handle is a security gap, not just an annoyance. We repair or replace the standard lock systems on Andersen, Pella, PGT, CGI, and ESW sliders so the door latches solidly again.

  4. 04

    Glass Repair and Replacement

Cracked, fogged, or shattered panels can usually be swapped without replacing the whole door. We fit tempered, laminated, or impact-rated glass to the opening and cut custom panels when stock sizes do not match.

  5. 05

    Weatherstripping and Seal Repair

Failed weatherstripping is what lets in drafts, water, and higher energy bills. We replace worn seals, vinyl sweeps, and frame gaskets, and in hurricane markets we use code-compliant materials so the door stays rated.

  6. 06

    Frame and Threshold Repair

Warped frames, damaged thresholds, and sagging headers take heavier work. We check whether a repair will hold or whether replacing the unit is the better spend, then tell you straight which way to go.

  7. 07

    Patio Door Repair

Patio sliders see the heaviest daily traffic in the house. We re-roller them, realign the track, and rebuild the latch so the door glides and locks the way it did when it was new.

  8. 08

    Sliding Door Tune-Up and Alignment

A full tune-up cleans and lubricates the track, resets roller height, and squares the panel. The door stops dragging and seals evenly from top to bottom.

  9. 09

    Emergency Sliding Door Repair

Stuck open, off the track, or will not lock at night? We run same-day emergency sliding door repair when we have capacity in your area so your home stays secure.

Sliding Door Repair: Common Questions, Answered

Here are straight answers to the questions we hear most about sliding door repair.

How much does sliding door repair cost?

Most sliding door repairs range depending on the specific issue. Roller replacement and track cleaning are on the lower end. Glass replacement, lock mechanism repair, and frame work are higher. Every job is quoted flat-rate before we start, no surprises.

How long does a typical sliding door repair take?

Most repairs are completed in 60-90 minutes. Complex issues like glass replacement or frame repair can take 2-4 hours. We stock common parts on every service van so most jobs are single-visit.

Do you repair sliding glass doors the same way as sliding doors?

Yes. Sliding glass doors and sliding doors use the same hardware systems, rollers, tracks, handles, mortise locks, keeper plates, and weatherstripping. Most homeowners use the terms interchangeably, and our repair process is the same for both. Whether your opening has a tempered glass panel, a laminated impact-rated panel, or a standard aluminum-framed slider, we diagnose and repair every component on-site.

Do you repair sliding doors on the same day?

Same-day service is available in most markets when we have capacity in your area. Call as early as possible and we'll confirm whether a licensed technician can be dispatched today.

Can a sliding door be repaired, or do I need to replace it?

Most sliding door problems can be repaired. Replacement is only necessary when the frame is warped beyond adjustment, the glass unit has failed in a sealed double-pane, or the track is structurally damaged. We always quote repair first.

Are your technicians licensed and insured?

Every JDM technician is licensed, insured, and bonded. We carry full liability coverage and stand behind every repair.

Do you service commercial sliding doors?

Yes. We handle commercial and automatic sliding doors, sensor entries, and ADA-compliant systems. See our Commercial Door Services page.
